Aspex Consulting Completes Project to Improve GP Support for Patients with AOD Issues
Aspex Consulting has successfully completed a project aimed at identifying key barriers and enablers for General Practitioners (GPs) supporting patients with problematic Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) use. The project focused on developing strategies to enhance system-level support for GPs in this critical area of healthcare.

Project Approach
The project involved a rapid literature review, consultations with GPs, AOD specialists, and sector stakeholders, as well as an online GP survey. A co-design workshop with Primary Health Tasmania helped further refine the recommendations.
Key Strategies
Aspex proposed six strategic directions to address the identified barriers, focusing on financial support, integrated care, referral pathways, opioid therapy access, reducing stigma, and enhancing education and training for healthcare providers.
Outcomes
The project’s findings and strategies aim to create a stronger support system for GPs and improve outcomes for patients with AOD issues. The proposed four-year implementation plan includes distinct stages for planning, delivery, and review.
